The Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, Mahfud MD, revealed mafia practices in the mining sector which resulted in the arrest of 126 coal ships. This was revealed at the Workshop on Synchronization of Main Mineral Mining Governance from a Polhukam Perspective which was broadcast via the Kemenkopolhukam YouTube channel on Tuesday, 21 March 2023.
The incident of the detention of a coal ship began when a businessman reported to Mahfud that his ship was detained even though the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) should have given permission to leave. Mahfud contacted Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Arifin Tasrif to inquire further about this.
The businessman said that if he did not get permission that day, he would leave the ship. In the end, Mahfud learned that there were 126 coal ships being detained and asked for money to be given permission to depart. According to Mahfud, the practice of detaining ships is part of the mining mafia in the area.
Meanwhile, Arifin revealed that this forum was initiated by the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs as a form of support in implementing the management of potential mineral goods in Indonesia.
The projected coal production in 2023 is estimated to reach 695 million tons, up 4.82 percent from last year’s target with a projected domestic demand of 177 million tons and 518 million tons for export. Even so, mafia practices in the mining sector are still a serious problem that must be addressed immediately.
